Reminder: Tai Chi

A reminder to myself: I want to sign up for classes at the Taoist Tai Chi Society of the USA - Colorado Branch

Don’t fuck with a hippo

Just remember, it is best not to fuck with a hippo. Even if you are a trained professional:

The woman, whose name was not released, was taking part in training with the 5-year-old male hippo, called Mahali, when she was bitten, zoo officials said. (via The Denver Channel)

Hippos are incredibly cute and fun to watch. But they also seem pretty cranky and have a general aura of bad-ass-ness. This story actually reminds me of the South Park episode about the Crocodile Hunter Steve Irwin. In that ep, Irwin kept poking animals in the ass, then being attacked. Sticking one’s hand in a hippo’s mouth? Almost as bad.

Grocery budget

“According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, you can feed a family of four healthily for $400 a week. (from 9news.com)” How much are you spending? If you have a budget, how much do you budget

Top 10 Tips for Saving Gas

Most excellent; a must read for everyone in our current fuel crisis. Best tip:

1. Turn off your engine if you are going to be idling for more than 30 seconds. Millions of gallons of fuel are wasted each day from idling. Your starter and battery system can handle the increased activity. (via Best Article Every Day)

If you don’t like the facts, change ‘em!

Leave it to that dastardly Dick Cheney to leave out facts because they don’t jive with the admnistration’s policies:

Seeking to play down the effects of global warming, Vice President Dick Cheney’s office pushed to delete from congressional testimony references about the consequences of climate change on public health, a former senior EPA official claimed Tuesday.

The official, Jason K. Burnett, said the White House was concerned that the proposed testimony last October by the head of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention might make it tougher to avoid regulating greenhouse gases emitted into the atmosphere. (via Yahoo News)

Yeah, who cares about the truth, anyway! Ignore whatever doesn’t work for us!

No more Mr. Nice Guy - Obama and foreign language education

Barack Obama is already showing that he is not going to ignore unfounded attacks. Apparently he learned well from John Kerry’s mistakes in 2004. So when the rabid right wingers took one of Obama’s comments and twisted it to say that Obama wanted to force Americans to learn Spanish, Obama fired right back:

This is an example of some of the problems we get into when somebody attacks you for saying the truth, which is: We should want our children with more knowledge. We should want our children to have more skills. There’s nothing wrong with that. That’s a good thing. I know, because I don’t speak a foreign language. It’s embarrassing. (via Yahoo News)

Bravo for Mr. Obama! Everything in his campaign is going right. There’s absolutely no reason to lay down and take these attacks. And Barack obviously understands that.

Scott Adams on staying inside

I kinda love Scott Adams. He is so cynical and funny at the same time. Every now and then he also says or writes something that totally reflects parts of me. Including a snippet from one of his blog postings:

I am not what you would call outdoorsy. If I wanted anything that was outdoors, I’d hire someone to bring it inside where civilization lives.

Now, I know I’m not the only nerd who is much more content staying inside (where there’s an internet connection) versus being out where it gets too hot, there are bugs that try to eat you, there’s no comfortable place to sit down, etc. It is cool to see someone famous admit to the same thing.

If you know what I mean.

John McCain Kicks Librarian Out of Town Hall Event

Whether Carol Kreck was meeting a very strict definition of trespassing or not, this didn’t need to get to the point it did. Why not let her carry her sign? Where was the harm in it? This was a bizarre occurrence. Simply bizarre.

Higher energy prices coming…

“Officials say heating bills could rise from 30 percent to 70 percent more this winter compared to last winter (from 9news.com).” As if the current recession isn’t depressing enough. Looks like we are going to be broke throughout winter. And we’ll all be wearing a few layers of clothing, so we can keep the thermostat set a lot lower than normal. Unfortunately, by the time that Barack Obama takes office in Janaury, most of the cold weather months are behind us. And it’ll take another good 6-12 months before his policies start turning things around…

Stop the world and let me off…
